Psychological / Psychoeducational Testing

Psychological and other Assessment Services

Florida Counseling and Evaluation Services provides a wide variety of psychological testing and assessments for both children and adults. Our psychological testing services are centered around neurological disorders such as learning disabilities, attention disorders such as ADHD (children and adults), personality testing, career and vocational testing, worker’s compensation evaluations, and assessments for those seeking educational accommodations. We also provide school and other educational assessments such as testing for giftedness.

School and Educational Testing

Our testing services can help determine your child’s IQ, learning style, and aptitude. Information gained from our assessments can assist with the determination of strategies needed to help your child reach his or her potential at school.

Gifted / Intellectual Testing

Gifted testing is conducted to help determine if a child meets the gifted criteria in order to enter this type of academic program in a public or private school in Florida. To identify intellectual giftedness, the psychologists at Florida Counseling and Evaluation Services administer one of the following intelligence tests (IQ test): Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-V), Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV), or the Woodcock Johnson-IV. Upon completion of the IQ test, parents or caregivers (i.e., guardians) are then provided with a comprehensive report detailing test results and relevant recommendations.

First, parents or caregivers meet with one of our psychologists to provide relevant background information and to plan and lay out the actual assessment procedures. Subsequently, the child or adolescent is given relevant psychological instruments, which can take anywhere from 90 - 180 minutes.

A report detailing the results of the evaluation as well as recommendations regarding school placement is generally available for parents within a week after the testing. The parent or caregiver will then meet with the psychologist to discuss the results regarding gifted program qualifications and other relevant findings.

Please Note: Private gifted testing does not guarantee or increase the likelihood of a child to qualify for gifted placement. Also, the same intelligence test cannot typically be repeated within 12 months. If your child is being re-tested, please advise our office which instruments were previously administered in advance. Failure to do so may lead to your child’s school rejecting the results of the gifted testing.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Testing

Our trained pediatric psychologists utilize general developmental screening tools with a focus on detecting developmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Your child may have difficulties with: social interaction, cognitive or sensory perception differences, disordered sleep, or may engage in repetitive behaviors. The degree to which individuals express such behaviors varies, as is true that they can change as the individual ages and matures.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Evaluations are tailored to determine whether your child has an autism spectrum disorder or another developmental condition. Our evaluators look carefully how your child socializes, communicates, and behaves across different settings. To ensure we have a complete understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, and needs of an individual suspected of having ASD, we may recommend a variety of assessment methods, including interviews and observation as well as cognitive, adaptive, emotional/behavior/personality, and achievement testing.

Career Development / Vocational Evaluation and Testing

Our psychologists or vocational evaluators can help identify your personality traits and learning style to determine your career aptitude and vocational interest. We provide comprehensive vocational assessment services, including interest inventories to help with career planning or career and lifestyle changes.

Pre-surgical Psychological Evaluations (i.e., Weight Loss or Pain Implantation Devices)

Florida Counseling and Evaluation Services offers comprehensive psychological evaluations for patients being considered for medical procedures. We offer pre-surgical evaluations for patients considering weight loss procedures (bariatric testing), pain pump, spinal stimulator, or other pain-reducing device installations, as well as for patients being considered for organ transplants.

Evaluations typically take between 2 and 3 hours and involve an in-depth clinical interview, a series of questionnaires that the patient is asked to complete, and psychological testing to better understand his or her emotional health and eating behaviors.

Dependent on findings, referrals can be made to mental health providers to help patients maximize their pre- and post-surgical success. Please note that a respective referral from your surgeon is required prior to scheduling.

Emotional Support (ESA) and Psychiatric Service Animals

Florida Counseling and Evaluation Services offers testing and assessment services for individuals who may benefit from an emotional support animal (ESA). A psychologist or other licensed mental health professional will meet with you or your child to conduct a thorough mental health diagnostic evaluation.

Depending on individual circumstances, psychological testing may be ordered to help establish or clarify a mental health diagnosis. Upon completion of the evaluation, we will provide feedback and – as needed – write a letter or complete form(s) addressing the benefits an emotional support animal may offer for the individual. Such certifications or letters are often required by airlines or landlords where the presence of a companion animal would normally not be allowed.

Forensic Psychological Assessment Services

Florida Counseling and Evaluation Services provides a variety of forensic psychological assessment services for children and adults which are invaluable to understanding critical issues for both adult offenders and juveniles who have committed offenses. Our evaluators have training and experience working in forensic contexts, including both assessment and treatment and provision of court reports.

Our team of psychologist and vocational evaluators provide forensic evaluations in areas such as:

  • Fitness for duty
  • Personal injury
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Law enforcement qualifications
  • Competence to stand trial
  • Substance Abuse

Please note: We do not provide custody-related evaluations.

Insurance Information

Many insurance companies pay, in part or in full, for psychological testing services. We will attempt to work with your health or other insurance company to obtain authorization(s) to cover testing and assessment services fees; however, payment for all testing and evaluation services are ultimately the responsibility of the respective guarantor (adult, parent, etc.).  Certain testing procedures (i.e., giftedness or forensic services) are generally not covered by healthcare insurances. Please check your benefits with your insurance company.
